Before Fashion Week.... Part II

Fashion is certainly in the air this fall. The weather is slowly changing to beautiful sunny days and a wonderful cool night breeze that is reminiscent of my time in the islands. As the world is now focused on spring fashion shown at the infamous Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Paris and London Fashion Weeks. We are going to take a look back at Caribbean Fashion Week that occurred this past June. There are a ton of fashion weeks that happen besides the world renown fashion weeks this fall. They are all growing in their own way, particularly Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW).

Just like our Africa Fashion Week feature, CFW had old comers and new comers alike. There were a whole slew of designers that showcased their summer and resort wear but we are going to take a look at some of our favorites here at Sasha Fierce Headquarters. First we will start with a Janel "Jae" Jolly. Her use of vibrant orange and purple were a standout for us here at SFH. The color and styles kept a cohesive line that demonstrated the African inspiration that she received for this latest collection she calls "Samburu." A highlight for us was her use of accessories throughout her show. She certainly has our favorite shoes out of the shows that we have checked out and her use of jewelry is evidently thought through to complete a packaged look coming down the runway. A peculiar but interesting aspect of her line was the use of leather. It is certainly typical to see chiffon, silk and linen at Caribbean Fashion Week but a rare find to see leather used in a resort wear. We liked it here.

Meiling and Arlene Martin (drenna Luna) are two other designers that we became fans of this Caribbean Fashion Week. I was excited to check out these two ladies websites and saw what an amazing collections they had to offer us.

Meiling is a seasoned vet from Trinidad who has worked on several different projects. She doesn't only work with designing for the runway but costume design to Olympic uniforms have been knots under her resume that she can attest to. One thing she has in common with the drenna Luna line is the wonderful use of white. Both their collections are something Ms. Lisa Raye former first lady of Turks and Caicos would truly appreciate. I love how we are never sick of seeing white in either collection. The innovation of materials, textures and cuts are what makes these ladies collections so attractive to the Sasha Fierce Headquarters. We want to big up our homeland Jamaica for hosting such a fabulous event and for the home team designers Jolly and Luna making us proud of our heritage.
